The House of Commons’ Business and Trade Committee has published its report on the Government’s small business strategy. It makes clear that while progress is being made on supporting SMEs, government ambition needs to go further.
From tackling cashflow pressures and reforming business rates, to improving access to skills, innovation and R&D tax credits, the message is clear: small businesses need a more joined-up system that helps them grow, adopt new technologies and compete at scale. Recommendations such as increasing SME participation in public procurement and ensuring bodies like Skills England respond directly to small business needs highlight major opportunities for growth.
For the National Centre for Universities and Business, this reinforces why stronger collaboration between universities and businesses matters. Connecting SMEs with research, talent and innovation ecosystems is essential to building a more productive, competitive economy.
