Developing Pathways to a Sustainable, Resilient Food Supply Chains

The UK fresh produce supply chain faces a range of challenges including increasing production and postharvest handling costs, complex post-Brexit import routes, and the effects of labour shortages and extreme weather events. FLW can reach 25% in the fresh produce supply chain (WRAP, 2011), and fruit and vegetable FLW contributes 422 Mt of annual greenhouse gas emissions globally (Guo et al., 2020). Tackling FLW will improve productivity and resilience whilst addressing consumer and policy demands for a sustainable food supply chain that contributes to Net Zero objectives.

Understanding how, where and why FLW occurs is essential in developing solutions for its reduction whilst future-proofing the supply chain to emerging challenges such as climate change. Consumer awareness has driven action for FLW reduction in the supply chain, but understanding the…
