Reducing Food Loss and Waste In The UK Fresh Produce Supply Chain:
Developing Pathways to a Sustainable, Resilient Food Supply Chains
The UK fresh produce supply chain faces a range of challenges including increasing production and postharvest handling costs, complex post-Brexit import routes, and the effects of labour shortages and extreme weather events. FLW can reach 25% in the fresh produce supply chain (WRAP, 2011), and fruit and vegetable FLW contributes 422 Mt of annual greenhouse gas emissions globally (Guo et al., 2020). Tackling FLW will improve productivity and resilience whilst addressing consumer and policy demands for a sustainable food supply chain that contributes to Net Zero objectives.
